Tried another pub w/ the other Fulbrighter in town - it's known as one of town's Welsh-speaking pubs. And boy did they speak Welsh. Y Mochyn Du means "The Black Pig." That's pretty much all the Welsh I know. Croeso means welcome. And I know the words for "keep left" because I see them all the time on the stairs, but too many y's and other vowels to reproduce off the top of my head.
Anyway, at Y Mochyn Du, I had Welsh faggots and mushy peas - yes, that's damn right, they're called faggots. They're like meat balls, kind of supposed to be like haggis, but they weren't. They were okay. Just your run of the mill lamb balls. The starter, though, was outstanding - a mix of seaweed and cockles with toast. YUMMY. It's called laverbread, and was fantastic. Salty and yummy. This picture doesn't do it justice - the cockles are mixed with the seaweed and toast is separate. Gosh it was tasty.
Had a few pints and a few whiskeys too, so a good night overall. And now, I'm off to read my paper for my conference in New Bedford that I now wish I didn't have to go to. Oh well, part of the job. Might post tomorrow - hoping to see McMurtry in Bristol, though, so might be the next day or whenever. Hasta, you mochyn (I think that's pig).
