Orkney Day 1

Just a hell of a lot of pictures today. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous.

The car, however, does deserve comment. Check out this "automatic" which involves a hell of a lot of shifting, but thank god, no clutch. Yee gads. It was a fairly frightening drive from the airport, but I got the hang of it.

Here's the gear shift. Oy. What a trip.

This was my favorite moment on the road of the day. I'm sorry, but that horse did NOT signal a right turn.

This was how I ended the day, car parked at the B&B and a walk down to the harbor (shown later). Best beer of the trip, best beer of Britain of the year. Awesome.

And now for the gorgeous Orcadian day. Holy cow, it was beautiful. You can't see him on this image, much, but there is a seal right in the middle of the middle of hte photo - there are two rocky lines in the middle of the photo, and a black shiny dot just above the second line. They were all too far away, but the seals were out like crazy today - have never seen so many in this bay. This is, by the way, Birsay Bay, a famous Norse site.

Cliffs at Birsay Bay with nesting birds and sea pinks. Lovely.

A fantastic Orcadian wall and hills and clouds. What a day.

Marwick Head, a WWII monument. Orkney has two huge periods in history - Neolithic (ie Skara Brae) and WWII (the Churchill Barriers, Scapa Flow, etc etc).

The road down to Birsay Bay - I walked back down to try to shoot a photo of the seal. This is about the average for roads in Orkney - narrow, with lots of passing places..

More cliffs and beach flats. Gorgeous. Seriously - most beautiful place on earth, I think.

Cows on a hill and another great Orcadian stone wall. I think this might be my favorite picture of the day.

Saint Magnus Cathedral, right in the center of Kirkwall, about two minutes down the road from where I'm staying. More of these photos will follow in future posts....

And the harbor in Kirkwall, looking cool per usual.

See why I like Orkney so much? What a great day.
